  • Giving Tuesday: A Global Movement of Generosity and the Powerful Role Donors Can Play

Each year, after the rush of Black Friday and the convenience of Cyber Monday, the world pauses for something profoundly different: a day not about receiving, but about giving. That day is Giving Tuesday—a global movement of generosity that has transformed the way individuals, families, and institutions think about philanthropy.

What began as a simple idea has grown into one of the most powerful charitable forces of modern times. And today, more than ever, donors are seeking ways to make their giving truly count—through strategic tools like Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) and philanthropic foundations.

The Story Behind Giving Tuesday

The idea for Giving Tuesday was born in 2012 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. It started as a modest concept: what if, after two days devoted to shopping, we dedicated a day to generosity instead?

In its first year, Giving Tuesday inspired people across the United States to donate, volunteer, and uplift causes they cared about. But it didn’t stop there. The movement spread faster than anyone imagined. Within a few short years, it had become a global phenomenon. Today, Giving Tuesday is celebrated in more than 90 countries, mobilizing billions of dollars in donations and countless acts of kindness each year.

At its core, the movement reflects a simple truth: generosity is contagious, powerful, and world changing.

The Impact: More Than Just Numbers

While Giving Tuesday now generates record shattering totals in charitable giving, the impact goes far beyond dollar amounts. It fuels grassroots change, global humanitarian efforts, community development, and innovation in philanthropy. It also creates space for people— regardless of income, background, or geography—to participate in something bigger than themselves.

For nonprofits, the day provides a critical boost of support as they approach year end. For donors, it is an invitation to pause and ask: How can my resources—my money, time, and influence—make a difference?

Giving That Ripples Far Beyond One Day

Research from the GivingTuesday Data Commons, one of the largest philanthropic data collaboration networks in the world, has consistently shown that Giving Tuesday donors demonstrate higher retention and engagement than typical first-time donors. In its 2023 Global Giving Trends Report, the Data Commons found that donors who first give on Giving Tuesday are considerably more likely to return in subsequent years and to give multiple times throughout the following 12 months. Their research points to a key insight: Giving Tuesday doesn’t just inspire a one-day spike in generosity—it draws in donors who are already motivated by purpose, community, and social impact, making them more likely to remain connected long after the event ends.

These findings are echoed by the Blackbaud Institute, whose Charitable Giving Report and State of Good Report track donor behavior across tens of thousands of nonprofits. Blackbaud’s analyses indicate that Giving Tuesday donors have stronger long-term value, higher response rates to future campaigns, and an increased likelihood of converting into recurring monthly donors. The Institute highlights that the social momentum surrounding Giving Tuesday—combined with messaging focused on impact and gratitude—creates a powerful emotional connection that drives donor loyalty. In fact, Blackbaud reports that Giving Tuesday donors often outperform standard year-end donors in multi-year retention.

For nonprofits, this research underscores a strategic truth: Giving Tuesday is far more than a fundraising date—it is a donor acquisition engine that reliably brings in supporters who stay. When organizations follow best practices recommended by these research groups—timely thank-you’s, transparent reporting, and clear stories of impact—Giving Tuesday becomes a pathway to lasting partnerships. This makes the event not just a moment of generosity, but a catalyst for building stronger donor relationships, sustained engagement, and long-term philanthropic growth.

The Powerful Role of DAFs and Foundations on Giving Tuesday

As philanthropy evolves, Donor Advised Funds have become one of the most effective tools for meaningful, flexible, and strategic giving. A DAF functions like a dedicated charitable account: donors contribute assets to the fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to charities over time.

On Giving Tuesday, DAFs are especially powerful because they allow donors to respond quickly. The funds are already set aside for charitable purposes, so when an urgent need or inspiring opportunity arises, donors can act immediately—often with just a few clicks.

Foundations, too, play a vital role. Whether family run or institutionally managed, foundations provide structured, long term vehicles for giving. They enable donors to turn their values into a legacy—transforming isolated donations into sustained, strategic impact that can span generations.

“Giving Tuesday is not just a day—it’s a reminder of the incredible good that happens when people choose generosity,” says Don Evans, CEO of Crewe Foundation. “At Crewe Foundation, we help donors channel that generosity in ways that ripple outward for years, not just hours.”

Crewe Foundation: Helping Donors Give with Purpose

Crewe Foundation has become a trusted partner for donors seeking clarity, strategy, and purpose in their philanthropy—especially during pivotal moments like Giving Tuesday. The organization’s mission is to empower donors with the tools and guidance needed to make their giving intentional, impactful, efficient and sustainable.

This philosophy is at the heart of Crewe Foundation’s work. Whether helping a family open a Donor Advised Fund, advising on the creation of a private foundation, or structuring complex charitable gifts, Crewe Foundation walks alongside donors at every step. The goal is simple: to align each gift with the donor’s values and the world they hope to shape.

How Donors Can Make the Most of Giving Tuesday

Giving Tuesday is a powerful moment—but it can also be a starting point for something much bigger. Here are a few ways donors can maximize their impact:

  • Use a Donor Advised Fund for strategic giving. A DAF allows donors to separate the decision to give from the decision of where to give. Contributions can be made when it makes financial sense, and grants can be recommended anytime—especially on days like Giving Tuesday when needs are in the spotlight.
  • Match your family’s or company’s contributions. Matching gifts multiply impact and encourage others to participate. A family or business that offers to match donations to a favorite charity on Giving Tuesday can double or triple the effect of every dollar raised.
  • Choose causes intentionally. Rather than scattering small gifts at random, donors can identify a few issues or organizations that align with their deepest values. Crewe Foundation often helps donors clarify what matters most to them and then find nonprofits that are doing strong work in those areas.
  • Give more than dollars. Financial support is essential, but it is not the only form of generosity. Donors can volunteer, advocate, share about causes on social media, or connect nonprofits with other potential supporters.
  • Make Giving Tuesday the beginning, not the end. The most transformative philanthropy happens when generosity becomes a habit, not a holiday. Donors can use the energy of Giving Tuesday to launch a year round giving plan, with regular grants or a multi year commitment to key organizations.

A Day of Giving, a Future of Impact

Giving Tuesday reminds us that generosity is a universal language—one that cuts across politics, geography, and background. For one day, people around the world choose unity over division, compassion over indifference, and action over apathy.

But the true power of Giving Tuesday lies in what happens after the day ends. When donors build thoughtful, intentional giving strategies—using tools like Donor Advised Funds and foundations—their generosity extends far beyond a single date on the calendar.

As Don Evans notes, “Every act of generosity plants a seed. And those seeds grow into legacies—legacies that change communities, families, and futures.”

This Giving Tuesday, and every day that follows, we are all invited to plant something meaningful. With the right tools and partners, our giving can shape a better world—one thoughtful gift at a time.
